Japanese-native Nori Nakamura was first introduced to fine wine at an early age while working at his uncle’s Italian restaurant in Tokyo. He graduated from the prestigious Keio University with bachelor’s degree in Economics and started his career in hotel management with Nikko Hotels International. During a graduation trip to Italy, Nori tasted a phenomenal 1981 Barbaresco. It was a defining moment in his young life, and set him on a path towards a career in winemaking. He earned a Japan Sommelier Certification, before transferring from Tokyo to California to assume the role of catering manager at the luxurious Hotel Nikko San Francisco. His subsequent experiences in wine country further fueled his passion, leading to cellar positions at Koves-Newlan and Pine Ridge Vineyards, and a degree in winemaking from the renowned program at the University of California, Davis. Most notably, he held the position of Assistant Winemaker at Artesa Vineyards & Winery, where he honed his skills at producing expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He then was the Head Winemaker at Jamieson Ranch Vineyard where he scored 90 points for his 2011 & 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2012 Pinot Noir.
"Joey G." got his start in the wine business at the early age of 20. He was waiting tables in Madison, Wisconsin when the fever first bit him. Since wine is all about the dirt, this should be no surprise as he is a third generation farmer from the south with ties to Iowa, Wisconsin and California. (He and his brother currently own a farm in Level Land, South Carolina.) His Dad grew up on a chicken farm in Clemson, SC where his grandfather was professor in the Poultry Science Department at Clemson University. Joey G’s first distributor job was in Greenville, SC in 1993 with Piedmont Wines (formally The Capital Group of SC now Republic National Distributing Company of SC) where he quickly went from a corporate on premise representative to Key Account Specialist in 18 months. After that, the wine industry has been a blur including stints as Tampa Manager with World Wines, District Manager with Kendall-Jackson, Vice-president of Sales for Grapevine of the Carolinas, Manager for The Country Vintner of SC (The Winebow Group) and National Sales Liaison for Merry Edwards Winery. He received his Certified Sommelier with The Court of Master Sommeliers in 2007. Through his 23 years in the wine industry Joey has been blessed to visit wineries on 6 out of 7 continents. His favorite saying is “Wine brings family, friends, acquaintances and even people that don’t know they are friends together.” Cheers!
